The Challenge excerpt
From Chapter 1 of The Challenge
Suddenly, she stood before the gate, staring at the house. Could it really be this one? It was large, almost stately, yet the garden lay wild and untamed, with plants spilling over beds and pathways alike. The steps leading to the door were clad in peeling wood, flanked by an old wrought-iron railing. The gate was closed. A pity. She would have liked to peer through the windows. They seemed to beckon. To pull at her. She sighed. There was something about the house.
Her gaze moved across the façade and halted at a window on the second floor. Was someone standing there? She thought she saw a figure, a woman with her hair twisted into a bun. Was she looking down at her? No. There was no one. Nina exhaled. Just her imagination. Nothing more. She shook her head, yet her eyes keptdrifting back to the window.
"No."
She turned sharply, as if breaking free from an invisible hold, and walked back toward the subway. This was absurd. She was never, never going to sit in a circle discussing chakras. Anne could talk herself breathless about them, but to Nina, it was all vapor and fantasy. What was solid, visible, and tangible was real. Not energies.
